Nowadays, the development of a country is doomed to fail without taking into consideration the important role of agriculture. Therefore, paying close attention to the latest agricultural technologies and natural resources is considered necessary.

The Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources group in INSF can receive research proposals on a variety of topics due to the vastness of the country. 

This group is one of the oldest ones in INSF. It was launched in 2005. The members of this group belong to the distinguished scientists, researchers, and university faculty. This group is intended to take huge strides encouraging the production of agricultural products based on the country’s local potentials. This group has taken influential steps in the achievement of goals and judicious use of water resources and agricultural lands through defining and carrying out research project in this area. 


Research priorities in this area include:

The Common Area

-Studying, preserving, and using the genetic resources appropriately, and improving genetic banks and collections, and reviving wildlife and biologic conditions of the different species and micro-organisms  

-Methods for improving and reforming the education system in agriculture, natural resources, water and environment, and the improvement of knowledge in the human resources 

-Proposing methods for monitoring and reducing natural disasters

-Studying the impacts of climate change on the country’s natural ecosystems and offering suggestions for the production of basic maps for resources

-Studying the passive defense models and emergency management in agriculture water, natural resources, and environment

-Studying the challenges for the agricultural sciences, natural resources, and the country’s environment roadmap

Agricultural Sciences

-The production of native seeds for field crops, garden plants, forests, and rangelands 

-Offering methods for the organization and management of using fertilizers and chemical, organic, and biologic pesticides in the country

-Planting halophytes and their introduction into the potential lands for the direct and indirect production of food

Improving Cultivation Patterns

-Identifying, preserving, and registering different species of fruit trees, vegetables, and medicinal plants using modern technologies in order to adjust their preservation consistent with environmental and non-environmental tensions, improve the product performance, and promote the product quality

-Using technology, methods, and models in order to improve the production of healthy and organic products

-Specifying the relation between healthy water and cultivation model

-The challenges for the production of garden products

-Natural Resources and Watershed Management 

-Suggesting new ways for the sustainable modification and improvement of natural vegetation

-Studying the ecologic capability of the natural ecosystems

Water Resources

-Non-conventional water resource management (salt water, sewage, water waste, and sea water) in agriculture, industry, home use

-The development of new irrigation methods and systems in order to improve irrigation efficiency

-Methods for the appropriate use of rain and snow

-Studying methods for water consumption management and its reduction in agriculture, industry, and home uses

-The improvement of using rain water and irrigation water

-Identifying new ways of appropriately managing and using water resources and systems of the country 

-Studying the unified management model in hydrological units in agriculture, natural resources, environment, and industrial and home consumption

-Challenges for the proper use of water resources

-Identifying the potential water resources in the country

-Water value measurement

-The development and optimization of the post-harvest technology,  processing and packaging agricultural and livestock products, and complementing the value continuum 

-The development of new technologies and improvement of mechanisms and methods for reducing energy consumption emphasizing the renewable energies

-Agriculture Management and Economics

-Methods for the improvement of investment in agriculture sector and identification of production potentials, product competitiveness, and target markets

-Methods for the improvement of production and consumption management

-Identification and improvement of business atmosphere in the countryside and offering the best models for economic and legal organizations

-Methods for actualizing collective evaluation and management and empowering the basic resources of the country (Sewage, land, weather, and plants) 

-How to create economic security and its efficiency in the qualitative and quantitative development of agriculture and human resources

Plant Medicine

-The use of modern methods (cellular-molecular) in the identification of pests 

-The integrated management of pests, diseases, and weeds of plants

-The Use of natural materials in pest and weed control and their mass production in order to produce healthy and organic products

-Identifying, registering, and preserving genetic resources (micro-organisms)

-Specifying the amount of economic damage caused by pests and plant diseases 

-Specifying the acceptable amount of pesticides left on agricultural products

-The development of early detection models for plant pesticide and diseases

-The role of maps on the distribution of pesticides, diseases, and weeds

-The role of protective agriculture in the reduction of damage by pesticides, diseases and weeds


-The improvement of land resources with a sustainable agriculture perspective

-The production and economic consumption of biologic fertilizers

-Managing the use of problematic lands (salt lands, lime, plaster…)

-Identification and improvement of land potentials for agricultural products

-Prevention of land erosion and desertification and suggestion of comprehensive models to appropriately use lands based on climate, social and economic situation of the country

-Proposing appropriate models for estimation and specification the degree of land erosion in Iran and suggesting correct ways of land erosion prevention in the different climate, economic and social situations in the country 

-Evaluation and estimation the potential production rate of the country’s lands for agricultural products and updating information about soil sciences 

-The production of necessary fertilizers for hydroponic and greenhouse cultivation 

-Challenges for soil health and soil products

Food industry, nutrition, and food safety 

-Improvement of food safety and studying the ways to reduce risks threatening the food safety in the society

-Methods for providing safe drinking water and its distribution in the society 

-How to lead the society towards a suitable nutrition model given the food materials produced in the country 

-How to improve the quality of traditional bread in the country and their packaging and keeping

-Evaluating and recycling plant, animal, and food waste, and expanding their function and proper use 

-How to prepare, process, and package medicinal plants and produce their essence for internal use and export

-The development of technology for producing healthy food in the country

-Studying the methods for creating small units for conversion and processing in the production zones (villages) and improving the production in order to promote economic and living conditions in the countryside

-The use of bio-, micro- and Nano-technology in food industries

-Methods for using renewable energy for processing and changing some of the agricultural products and medicinal plants 

-The production of food products using natural methods and without using artificial preserving materials


-The use and integration of modern and traditional methods for recycling waste water

-Passive defense and crisis management in water resources and environment

-Determining the economic value of natural resources, ponds, …

-Economic evaluation of resources for different species ( proposing solutions for reviving their population and guidelines for their protection)

-Integrating an economic perspective of environment with evaluation and monitoring of environment

-Designing a model for environment politics at different levels in the country (from strategy to operation)

-Preserving water and land ecosystems (challenges and optimization)

Wood and Paper Industry

-Studying the possibility of changing the structure of wood and paper industry from a single product perspective to multi product one, and the quality of wood products for comparison with world standards

-Studying the amount of wood materials needed by other industries and the amount of waste in wood industry and studying its recycling

-Challenges using forest resources and providing necessary food materials for wood and paper industries

-Studying technological needs in order to use agricultural waste in wood and paper industries and estimating the amount of agricultural waste which can be replaced for wood in the relevant industries

-Studying the status quo of human resources involved in wood and paper industries and evaluating the production of basic wood products in the country

-Studying the potentials for providing wood in the non-forest lands and developing wood production at the semi-industrialized level

-The reduction of formaldehyde use in the production of wood materials 

-Writing guidelines for designing and building wood made constructions for earthquake prone areas

-Studying and developing the technology for surplus wood in the forest and other parts of wood with a non-conventional size for the industry
