INSF Delegates Attended GRC 2019 Annual Meeting

Global Research Council (GRC) Annual Meeting was held from May 1-3 in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. This 8th GRC Annual Meeting was hosted jointly by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET). The INSF President, Dr. Eaman Eftekhary, and our head of International Relations and Scientific Diplomacy, who is a member of GRC Executive Support Group, participated in this meeting.

GRC is a virtual organization, whose members are heads of research funding agencies around the globe and Iran has been a member of this Council since 2015. Each year, the GRC regional and annual meetings focus on one topic from different pre-planned approaches. This year’s meeting addressed the increasing expectations from scientific research to deliver societal and economic impact. Following the year-long discussions, the GRC members endorsed the GRC 2019 Statement of Principles on Expectations of Societal and Economic Impact, a statement which introduces 18 key principles in addressing impact expectations as well as evaluating the societal and economic impact of research, both ex ante and ex post.

Since the 2016 Annual Meeting, another topic has been introduced to be discussed in GRC sessions, i.e. promoting equality and status of women in research. The GRC Gender Working Group (GWG) was formed in 2017 to contribute to the implementation of the Statement of Principles and Actions: Promoting the Equality and Status of Women in Research  (endorsed 2016). This year, they discussed the gender dimensions of research impact and the GWG presented a Case Study Booklet which is a collection of actions taken by GRC member countries to raise awareness on gender issues and promote the status of women in research. Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) has also taken active part in the matter, establishing a Women in Research Working Group with the aim of collecting information on the status quo of women in research in Iran and arriving at solutions to better the conditions.

INSF delegates have also sat side-meetings with heads of research funding organizations of Asia-Pacific region to more closely discuss their concerns about review process and the support provided to young researchers.
