Introduction

The working group was established in April 2014 with the objective of commissioning or carrying out research projects related to different types of environmental pollution, such as air, noise, radiation, water and soil; present the results along with solutions to high-ranking officials of the country; and inform the public of the negative consequences of pollution in order to reduce them on various levels of society.

The group consists of leading Iranian academics in the fields of environmental science, chemical engineering, environmental health, occupational health, meteorology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, medicine and environmental epidemiology.

The working group’s missions are as follows:

1. Reviewing and summarizing the previous research results

2. Planning for the promotion of the culture of environmental perseverance at all official and unofficial levels of educational 

3. Determining research needs in order to cover shortage of information

4. Preparing a comprehensive report on the status quo

5. Setting necessary interventions to reduce exposure to pollutants and evaluating interventions based on their cost-effectiveness

6. Supporting and encouraging research projects in line with the working group’s objectives

7. Facilitating and promoting interactions between relevant organizations and institutions.

 

Research Priorities

Research priorities of the working group on the general topics of pollution, including air, noise, radiation, soil, water, health and food safety, can be defined as follows:

Air pollution

Status quo

Reviewing laws, regulations, rules and standards

Evaluating indoor air quality

Verifying urban air pollution data

Checking the physical and chemical properties of air pollutants in different regions of the country

Checking the physical and chemical properties of haze particles in the affected regions

Evaluating the climatic potential for air pollution in micro and macro scales.

Identifying the most common diseases caused by air pollution which pose threat to public health

Identifying environmental health risk(s) in Iran in terms of cause and effect.

Collecting comprehensive data on the most common diseases in the country, both in the past and the present. 

Collecting comprehensive data on environmental risk factors, both in the past and the present. 

Evaluating the efficiency of the steps taken to improve environmental conditions.

Air pollutants

Evaluation and determination of stationary and mobile sources of air pollution and reporting an emission inventory

Determining the effects of fuel quality on air pollution and health

Determining the quality of fuels used in the country and the amount of pollutants emitted from them (pilot study)

Health effects

Determining the metabolites of pollutants (biological indices)

Determination of the burden of disease attributed to air pollutants

Establishment of a pollution lab for investigating the health effects of air pollution

Determining the relative risk and estimating the health effects of air pollution

Determining the relative risk and estimating the health effects of haze particles

Evaluation of the relationship between health effects and air pollutants across different age groups.

Prediction and modeling

Evaluation of the capacity of atmosphere

Predicting air quality of the future considering all variables, such as climate change and states of emergency

Evaluation of the amount of pollutants emitted from various stationary and mobile sources and determining the diffusion coefficients

Modeling air pollution control methods and determining their effectiveness

Modeling haze particles control methods and determining their effectiveness

Finding the sources for haze particles in different cities and determining the role of haze particles in in the future of air pollution 

Determining the dispersion model of pollutants emitted from stationary and mobile sources

Determining the dispersion model of haze particles based on their sources

Estimating the amount of greenhouse gases released from different sources in Iran

Control procedures

Cost-benefit analysis of control procedures

Developing a comprehensive plan for reducing environmental air pollution based on the current capacity of atmosphere

Determining the effectiveness of programs, policies, and national and international laws on the quality of air in the country

Providing strategies for air pollution control and reduction of  air pollution effects in cases of states of emergency 

Providing strategies for haze particles control and technical economic analysis for these strategies  

Developing a comprehensive plan for controlling greenhouse gases in different regions

Radiation pollution

Conducting epidemiologic studies of cancers caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation among different groups of workers

Conducting risk assessment of exposure to ultraviolet radiation while using energy-efficient light bulbs

Conducting risk assessment of using tanning beds

Determining the burden of disease attributed to non-ionizing radiation pollution

Determining the relative risks and health effects of non-ionizing radiation

Studying different environmental effects of non-ionizing radiation in urban environments

Determining the environmental damages caused by radiation in the country

Developing a dynamic monitoring plan for radio waves in urban environments

Updating occupational and environmental standards with regard to radiation

Water pollution

Evaluating the existing resources of drinking water in terms of quality and quantity

Studying the roles of water consumption in agricultural, industrial and domestic sectors

Checking the status of incoming and outgoing water from the borders

Studying the status of water supply systems in the large cities of Iran

Studying water consumption in different cities of the country and strategies to reduce consumption

Evaluating the effects of water pollution sources on water resources

Setting standards, rules and regulation with regard to water

Studying the necessity of upgrading municipal wastewater treatment and ways to achieve standards

Studying special and emerging sources of pollution and strategies to remove them

Evaluating unconventional methods for supplying water, such as desalination, recycling, reuse, and using rain water

Studying different methods for artificial recharge of groundwater

Studying household water treatment systems

Verifying methods for water quality assessment

Evaluating the necessity of promoting water treatment for households, industries, hospitals, etc.

Studying methods for attracting public participation in reducing and controlling water consumption

Evaluating decentralized methods for wastewater treatment 

Studying the effects of Persian Gulf wars on water resources

Determining the burden of disease caused by purification problems and water quality

Conducting a feasibility study on various methods for monitoring water resources

Evaluating methods for predicting water quality and quantity

Evaluating the self-purification capacity of water resources in the country

Soil pollution

Reviewing standards, laws, rules and guidelines related to soil (based on climatic conditions of the country)

Studying oil-contaminated soils and methods for purification

Studying the effects of war on soil pollution in the warzones

The effects of oil pipelines and facilities on soil quality

Zoning the country in terms of radioactive resources, heavy metals, etc.

Evaluating the management of sludge in treatment plants, municipal wastewater and its effects on the topsoil

Studying the reuse of wastewater and its effects on agricultural soil

Evaluating the ecological potential of soils in our country

Studying the effects of municipal, industrial and hazardous solid waste disposal, on soil quality in different regions of the country

Studying the effects of compost quality on agricultural soil quality

Health and food safety

Standards related to food safety and hygiene, including:

  •      Preparing new standards
  •      Evaluating existing standards and revising them if necessary
  •      Monitoring adherence to standards (monitoring the performance of the executive body of government with regard to following the standards)

Studying chemical and microbial contamination of food and agricultural products in Iran

Evaluating safety and health education level among individuals involved in production and distribution of food products

Studying pesticides used in agricultural and livestock products

Studying natural additives used in food industry

Evaluating the existing methods and technologies and creating new ones for processing food and increasing its shelf life

Analyzing mycotoxins in domestic and foreign dried fruits

Evaluating safety in genetically modified foods

Evaluating the quality and hygiene of drinking water
