Introduction

The increasing progress in the academic achievements and development of the country in Humanities and Social Sciences after the Revolution gives rise to the expectation that a considerable change be made at the human side of the development as well. However, the Supreme Leader’s emphasis on the necessity to reform Humanities and Social Sciences based on an Islamic-Iranian approach and the policymakers and researchers’ concerns which are consistent with the higher order documents of the country show that the measures taken so far are not sufficient regarding the developmental needs and goals of Islamic Republic of Iran. Therefore, carrying out basic and applied research in this area is one of the basic needs of the country.

Given the important role of INSF in the country, Islamic Studies group was founded in 2011 as an independent group. This group supports research projects on different Islamic areas in order to expand the development of science in this field. The members of this group consist of highly distinguished scientists and university faculty members who are active in this field of study.

Research Priorities

Religion, its functions, and its relations with other domains

In the modern world, the hegemony of Rationalism, Materialism, Technology, etc., has caused human beings to further distance themselves from spirituality and religious concepts. This increasing alienation has resulted in a situation where the necessity of religion and religious concepts in the postmodern world and their functions in the life of modern human beings are challenged by anti-religious thoughts. These deviant schools have questioned the efficacy of religion on such grounds as the changing nature of the modern world, obsoleteness of religious concepts and their affinity with the past.

A decisive answer to such trends both in an atomistic and holistic manner and the study of different aspects regarding the necessity of religion and its functions in every step of life can be areas of research for further investigation.

The most important research areas in this field are as follows:

-Religion and the reasons for its necessity in life

Religion challenges in the modern era

What makes finding out the truth and right choice difficult is the problem to distinguish the right from wrong. Inappropriate interpretations from within the religion can direct the youth to the wrong path even more than those of Atheism and denial of God. The opponents of religion find the best way to fight religion through casting doubt on its originality and destroying it from within. The pluralism of sects, fake spiritualism, and modern interpretations are indicative of this strategy. Keeping society clean and safe from these deviations is only possible through carefully investigating these problems, clarifying them, and quickly addressing them. It is clear that all of these activities should be done based on thorough research and study of these areas.

The most important research areas in this field are as follows:

-Religiosity challenges from cognitive, mental, and spiritual aspects

-Challenges of the religious society

-Challenges of the religious intellectuals

-Challenges of religion preaching strategies in the modern world

-The challenges of religious education in the modern world

Religious democracy and Islamic Awakening

According to many researchers, what happened about the rise of people in the Islamic countries recently was not only about restoring democracy and having people’s say in the governing process, rather the main manifestations of this uprising were representative of a religious perspective and a desire for the realization of social ideals such freedom, justice, and development consistent with Islamic principles.

Since Islamic republic of Iran is the pioneer in upholding democracy based on religious principles in the contemporary era, it is expected that theoreticians and intellectuals doing research on Islamic Awakening may be eager to study and replicate Iran’s experience of forming a political, economic, social and cultural government with a Islamic background. Writing down these experiences in a comprehensive manner which ranges from theoretical principles to practical steps, trial and error of these systems, and evaluation of their findings in comparison with other societies and governments will be excellent topics for further research.

Clarifying Imam Khomeini and Imam Khamenei’s Figh, Osul, Kalam, moral, political, and spiritual aspects

In an Islamic government, the position of the Supreme Leader is clearly defined with certain structural responsibilities given to him. Therefore, the personality and behavior of the person who holds this position due to his elevated scientific, moral and spiritual values should be considered a model to be studied.

Not only the clarification of these aspects in Imam Khomeini and the Supreme Leader can substantiate theories of religious governing scientifically, but also it can be the best strategy for creating a meaningful relationship between different members of the society particularly between the youth and the Supreme Leader.

The most efficient ways to communicate religious knowledge to others (including kids, teenagers, and youths)

According to Imam Ali (Nahjolbalaghe) teaching of religious concepts to society is one of the main responsibilities of the government and is the citizens’ right. Actually, what prevents the decline of values and culture is the transmission of this knowledge from one generation to the next one. Given the current developments in technology, instruments, and the scope of interaction in the modern world, it is necessary to provide the teachers and preachers with the most scientific and efficient ways for communicating religious values based on the people’s needs from different age groups. This is only possible if further exploratory and confirmatory research is done on these matters.

The most important research areas in this field are as follows:

-Principles of communicating religious concepts to kids

-Principles of communicating religious concepts to teenagers

-Principles of communicating religious concepts to the youth

-The role of the family in the communication of religious concepts to siblings

Strategies to address questions and doubts related to the religion

Raising questions and casting doubt is one of the strategies used in the war of thoughts for or against the religion. With the development of digital instruments and virtual space, the number and variety of these questions and the speed of their distribution have drastically increased. Constant monitoring, data gathering, addressing the questions and raising counter questions simultaneously is a must in the cultural management of society. This should be based on frequent and comprehensive research in this area.

The most important research areas in this field are as follows:

-Responding to Kalam questions in aspects such as Monotheism, Revelation, Nabovat, Imamat, Maad, at the level of university professors and elites

-Responding to questions of Epistemology and Anthropology at the level of university professors and elites

-Responding to social and political questions

Life style in Islamic teachings

The distance of modern human beings from revelationary teachings plus an independent plan for the life style have created a set of behaviors which is called “life style” nowadays. This set is highly popularized by its designers since it brings with itself cultural hegemony and economic interests.

Sharia teachings are about the life style which delicately cover the smallest and largest aspects of human life with clear instructions. Extracting these concepts and putting them into a new framework not only portrays how to live a religious life, but also makes it possible to prevent Western and Humanistic life styles from creeping into the religious society.

The most important research areas in this field are as follows:

-Personal life style in Islamic teachings

-Social lifestyle in Islamic teachings

-Family lifestyle in Islamic teachings

-International lifestyle in Islamic findings

-The comparison of traditional, modern and religious life styles

-The principles of moral, rational, and emotional education of siblings in Islamic teachings
